How the days are counted

Days = End date − Start date  (+ 1 if the end date is included)

By default the count works like a calendar: from Monday to the following Monday is 7 days. The start date is counted and the end date is not, so the result is the number of nights, or the number of “days later”. Tick Include the end date when both dates are days you want to count, for example the days of a holiday or a course running from the 2nd to the 16th inclusive.

Example: from Monday 2 March 2026 to Monday 16 March 2026 is 14 days (2 weeks), of which 10 are working days from Monday to Friday. Including the end date, it is 15 days and 11 working days.

Working days

Working days are the days in the counted range that are not weekend days. Weekends differ by country: most countries rest on Saturday and Sunday, many countries in the Middle East and North Africa rest on Friday and Saturday, and some workplaces use a single rest day. Tick the days that are not working days for you.

Public holidays are not subtracted. Holidays differ by country, region and even employer, so the count is only of weekdays. Subtract any holidays in the range yourself.

Common questions

What if the end date is before the start date?

The calculator swaps them, shows the positive difference and tells you it has done so, so a count of days “since” a past date works either way round.

Are leap years and daylight saving time handled?

Yes. Leap days such as 29 February 2028 are counted, and because only calendar dates are used, the hour lost or gained when clocks change cannot turn 1 day into 0.96 or 1.04 days.

How are months and years counted?

Months and years are shown the same way as in the age calculator: complete months first, then remaining days. Months have different lengths, so “1 month” from 15 January is 31 days but from 15 February only 28 or 29.
