How the tip is calculated

Tip = Bill × Tip% ÷ 100   Total = Bill + Tip   Each person = Total ÷ People

Example: a bill of 86.40 with a 15% tip: the tip is 86.40 × 0.15 = 12.96 and the total is 99.36. Split three ways, each person pays 33.12. With "round up" ticked, each person pays 34, the total becomes 102.00 and the tip becomes 15.60, which is about 18.06% of the bill.

Tipping customs differ around the world

Whether to tip, and how much, varies widely between countries, between types of business and even between cities. In some places tipping is expected and makes up a large part of service workers’ pay; in others a service charge is already included in the bill, and in some tipping is uncommon or may even be declined. This calculator does the arithmetic for any percentage you choose; it does not recommend an amount. If you are traveling, check local guidance from an official tourism source, and look at your receipt for a line such as "service charge" or "service included" before adding a tip.

Tip before or after tax?

Where sales tax is added to the bill, some people tip on the pre-tax amount and some on the total. The difference is small but real: 15% of a 100 bill is 15, while 15% of 108.00 (with 8% tax) is 16.20. Enter whichever amount you want the percentage to apply to.

Common questions

How do I work out 15% or 20% in my head?

For 10%, move the decimal point one place left (10% of 86.40 is 8.64). Half of that is 5%, so 15% is 8.64 + 4.32 = 12.96. Double 10% for 20%: 17.28.

What if people ordered different amounts?

Calculate each person’s own subtotal separately with one person in the "people" field, so everyone tips in proportion to what they ordered.

Why does rounding up change the tip percentage?

Rounding each share up adds a little to the total, and that extra goes to the tip. The calculator shows the resulting tip and its actual percentage so nothing is hidden.
